Chelsea's Travels: Illinois Ag Day and Tennessee Ag Day on the Hill

Premier Leadership, Personal Growth, and Career Success

Nashville FFA chapter in Illinois; they took home a few honors from the judging contest and were lots of fun to meet.

FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. When it comes to career success, we as FFA members have some amazing opportunities to see that goal come to fruition. As members, we visit business and industry representatives and sometimes attend events which directly involve our career goal.

I had that opportunity at the Tennessee Ag Day on the Hill and the Illinois Ag Day. With a combination of politics and farming, I was in "hog heaven" you might say. Like many members, I hope to manage at least a small farm operation and have a full time career (in public policy for me). With a milking contest between legislators in Tennessee and a livestock judging contest mixed with ag issues in Illinois, I could not have had two better experiences. Each day focused on the good things we do in agriculture and the need to continue to serve as advocates. That's exactly what we do as FFA members.

Take time to seek out chances to engage with those who work in the field in which you are interested. Job shadow, visit, or simply call up one of your role models and take steps toward career success daily.

Levy's Latest (Caliornia Convention)

California convention! Man what a time! It was so good being back in the CA for my home state convention. We had over 4,000 students attend the 82nd California State Leadership Conference in Fresno, CA. Bethany and I arrived Wednesday before convention and had a couple of days to visit with members who were competing in CDE's and Judging Competitions, and I also had a little bit of time to catch up with some old friends while being back in my college town. The convention lasted 4 days, with two keynote speakers, Mark Scharenbroich and Josh Sundquist, the Monday Night Dance, and tons of workshops, presentations, career shows, and of course the election of the New State Officer Team! Congratulations to Vince, Lindsey, Jackie, Ben, Jessica, and Casey... y'all have a wonderful year ahead of you! And to the old team, Adrienne, Sam, Mikaela, Jordan, Kaylyn, and Tatiana, all of you did a wonderful job with State Convention and thank you so much for your outstanding year of service! California couldn't have had a more amazing 2009 - 2010 State FFA Officer Team than yourselves!

The Adventures of Alex: Alaska- The Last Frontier!

After four days, 53 Alaska FFA members and two hours of heavy snow, I’ve discovered that the land of mountains, wilderness and polar bears is also home to some amazing FFA members.

I had an absolute blast hanging out with the Fairbanks, Homer, Kodiak, North Pole and Palmer chapters and watching them rock their CDEs, participate in workshops and give back to the community through a day of service. Here’s a little glimpse of just how much fun we had!

The 2009-2010 Alaska FFA State Officers – Corinne, Ben, Emily, Irene and Isaac – did such an awesome job bringing all the chapters together and mixing fun with professionalism! I loved learning about Corinne’s dedication to the state for the past year, Ben’s natural ability to make everyone erupt into laughter, Emily’s heart for people, Irene’s strong standing character and Isaac’s belief-driven style of living. Many of you might recognize Isaac from National Convention- yes he was that awesome Alaska guy that sang with his guitar!!

A big CONGRATULATIONS goes out to the 2010-2011 Alaska FFA State Officer team! Kevin, Lydia, Darien and Lindsey, you have such awesome potential and I can’t wait to watch you lead Alaska FFA this next year.

I met tons of phenomenal members that had a real impact on me. A quick thanks to Kevin from Kodiak, Ryan from North Pole, and Marie and Wendy from Homer for showing me the power of passionate, genuine people. You guys rock!

Here are my top five Alaska highlights!

1. Learning about the Envirothon while watching FFA members demonstrate outstanding skills and understanding

2. Seeing moose crossing signs EVERYWHERE

3. Watching Alaskans bust out some sweet dance moves to the “Lead Out Loud” song

4. Admiring the gorgeous, gigantic mountains that surrounded us in all directions

5. Getting to develop personal relationships with State Officers, State Officer Candidates, staff, Past State Officers and Alaska FFA members who live with heart

The Adventures of Alex: Missouri State Convention!

State Conventions are mass pandemonium! Hundreds of people standing in alphabetical order to get their awards. Nervous stomachs twisting as CDE results get closer and closer. Thundering music signaling that the session is just about to begin.

But only one convention has a fuzzy tiger named Truman that repels in from the ceiling!

I spent four days in the Show Me state on the campus of Mizzou with 16 passionate individuals who have been serving over 24,000 Missouri FFA members with everything they’ve got. Their message:
Show Me the YOU in Blue!

Samantha, Clayton, Lauren, Megan, Meredith, Shari, Elizabeth, Taylor, Paige, Kelsie, Elizabeth (there are two), Brendon, Mandy, Jennifer, Matt and Walter – you should be proud of the lives you’ve touched this year and the first-rate convention you hosted. I’m blessed to have met you!

Convention concluded with the installation of new officers: Jon, Austin (Austy), Mareta, Colton, Nancy, Sarah, Christopher, Rachel, Kerry, Jessica, Sonja, Erin, Quaid, Tiffany, Austin, Michelle and Samantha! They are a committed, enthusiastic group that has BIG plans for Missouri FFA this year.

Here’s a photo journal of their journey and my amazing visit to Missouri!!

Randa's Journey--Iowa FFA Convention!

Hello Friends!

After attending the Iowa FFA convention, I was once again reminded of how FFA members are consistently Leading Out Loud. Thanks to the state officers, Ryan, Hilary, Jacob, Beth, Dan, Amber, Brittany, Spencer, and Brady this convention was a huge success! After meeting many members such as the Vinton FFA chapter and seeing numerous awards given out there was some sure talent at this convention. The week started off with events such as FFA Idol, the business session where state officer candidates gave election speeches, and workshops from numerous presenters. Once the sessions started we heard from great speakers and recognized members for their outstanding accomplishments! As I sat on the convention floor during one of the sessions and listened to the state officers talk about perserverence, I was reminded of how grateful I am to be a part of an organization that lives so strongly by its values. The true perserverance from FFA members is something to be celebrated and it is truly exemplified in Iowa. Thank you to Iowa FFA for a wonderful convention, I could not be more proud and honored to have attended!

The Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter that attended my workshop!

Some friends that attended the workshop! Awesome group of individuals.

The Iowa FFA Association recently built a new Enrichment Center. The grand opening and ribbon cutting was right after convention.

FFA members during convention!

The retired State officer team. They put on one phenomenal Convention!!

The New state officer team! Best of luck to y'all.

A special thank you to state staff, advisors, guests, members and friends such as Molly, Clark, Austin, Dakota and Michael for making this such an incredible experience! I'm always amazed at the generosity of people the willingness to open their hearts to others. Thank you for all that you do!

The Adventures of Alex: Burger King Logic

We live in a fast food world! There’s Taco Bell – “Think outside the bun.” We have McDonalds – “Ba-da-ba-ba-ba-ba I’m lovin’ it.” And Subway – “5…5-dollar…5 dollar foot long!” Americans like things fast, we like things easy and we like things like we like our Whopper cheeseburgers, our way.

But, how is that possible? How are 7 billion people with hundreds of different languages, thousands of different religions and vastly different tastes in food suppose to get “their way?”

The answer: by standing up for their favorite entree and being willing to settle for a compromised side.

Keeping on the topic of fast food, one of the hardest decisions our team has to make is the age-old question: where are we going to eat tonight? You see, every night we’re together in Indianapolis, the whole team is bound to one rental soccer-man van. That means we usually have to agree on one place to eat. But, everyone has a little different taste.

Levy can’t stand Taco Bell or Arbys. Randa, Bethany and Chelsea aren’t ready for Japanese or Chinese food after our trip to Japan. Chase could eat at McDonalds every night. And my tastes shift on a daily basis.

Even though I love Arbys, Taco Bell and Asian food and try to avoid McDonald’s most of the time, we try to pick a restaurant that will satisfy everyone’s tastes. Last week, after quite a long debate, the team decided… let’s just order pizza. Was that my first choice? No. Did it sound alright? When doesn’t pizza sound good?!
Teamwork is all about compromise.

Whether it’s a decision as simple as our team’s dinner debate or as complex as what community service project your chapter should do this month, we have to remember that Burger King logic doesn’t rule the world. We have to hold on to our most important entrees, but be willing to compromise on the side dishes.

What in the world does that mean? Leaders have opinions. Leaders are decisive and strong. We know what’s best for everyone else right?

Wrong! The key to leadership is knowing when it’s best to step up and make decisions and when it’s more beneficial to let someone else step up and take the reins.

If you feel strongly about something – your chapter’s yearly theme, what Career Development Event you’d like to compete in, earning your State FFA Degree, the topic for your group’s English project, how your friends should treat each other – then step up! Explain to others your opinion and why you feel the way you do; sometimes people listen to the loudest voice. We can’t compromise on the things we hold nearest to our hearts – morals, values, beliefs, ideals.

On the flip side, if something isn’t very important to you or someone else is more passionate about their stance than you are, realize that compromise isn’t failure. Don’t get me wrong, you shouldn’t “go along” with someone just because they are passionate – how do you think Hitler came into power? Rather, understand that we all have opinions. We all have wants and needs. And we all see situations a little differently. So let your brother pick what your family will eat for dinner. Let your classmate be your Chemistry group leader since they have a knack for science. Trust that your parents are giving you advice that would be in your best interest.

Before making a decision, our team has started asking ourselves, “How important is this to me?” We rank how passionately we feel about something on a scale from one to ten. If we’re at a seven or greater, it’s probably best to speak up. If we’re three or below maybe it’s time to let someone else make the final decision.

It’s true, we live in a fast food world. But, not everyone can “Have it just their way.”

Stand strong on those things you believe in. Never sacrifice your beliefs. But remember that compromise plays an important role in teamwork.
